James James Kitchens has been designing traditional and contemporary kitchens in West Kirby since 1972. As the Wirral’s first dedicated kitchen design studio, we have spent more than 50 years helping homeowners create beautiful, functional spaces at the heart of their homes.
Our spacious showroom features a range of beautiful kitchen displays from trusted partners both nationally and locally, including suppliers from nearby Liverpool. We are proud to offer high quality brands such as Laura Ashley and Symphony.

Driving Kitchen Design Forward
Maria Challis is the Director of James James Kitchens in West Kirby, and often describes herself as the “accidental kitchen company director.”
With a background in business rather than kitchens, Maria spent many years running her own companies before taking on the opportunity to lead a long-established kitchen business. Her journey has been shaped not only by her professional experience, but also by personal resilience, having rebuilt her life and career after losing her husband in 2009 while raising two young children.
When Maria took over James James Kitchens, she had no prior industry experience, but what she did have was the leadership, determination, and willingness to learn. Today, she is proud to lead a business with over 50 years of history, building on its strong foundations alongside a dedicated team, with a strong focus on trust, relationships, and community.
Deeply connected to West Kirby, Maria also leads annual charity fundraisers through the business, giving back to the community that continues to support its success.
Her story is a reflection of believing in yourself, even when the path ahead isn’t clear.

Personal Design Advice
Meet Julia, one of our experienced kitchen designers at James James Kitchens. She is here to guide you through every step of your kitchen journey, from your first ideas and inspiration through to the final design details. Julia works closely with each client to understand their style, space, and practical needs, ensuring every kitchen is thoughtfully tailored to suit both the home and the people who live in it.
Originally from Athens, Greece, Julia moved to Liverpool to study Interior Design, where she completed a Bachelor of Arts degree alongside further studies in still and architectural drawing and photography. Creativity has always played a central role in her life, from ballet to music, and this artistic background continues to influence her design approach.
Focusing on layout, aesthetics, and material selection, Julia creates kitchens that are both functional and visually balanced. She enjoys working collaboratively with clients throughout the entire design process, developing ideas from initial concepts to the finished space, resulting in kitchens that feel considered, practical, and personal.

Meet Vania, originally from Malta, Vania began developing her design skills early in her career, laying the foundations for a diverse and hands-on journey across multiple industries. She went on to live in Ireland for 21 years, where she further refined her expertise, before she and her husband made the bold decision to sell everything and spend three years sailing around Europe and the Mediterranean.
This unique chapter not only deepened her knowledge of sailing but also gave her invaluable, practical experience in yacht building and space optimisation — mastering the art of making even the smallest spaces both functional and beautifully considered.
Vania’s passion for kitchens began at Scavolini, and she has since built a varied career spanning kitchen design, engineering, and the agricultural industry. Now based in the UK, she specialises in kitchen design, interior planning, and technical detailing. Vania is here to guide you through every step of your kitchen journey, from your initial ideas and inspiration through to the final design. Working closely with each client, Vania takes the time to understand their style, space, and practical needs, ensuring every kitchen is beautifully tailored to the home it belongs in.
