Designing for Connection, Not Just Cooking
When most people think of a “dream kitchen”, they picture sleek worktops and top-tier appliances. But I wanted something more, something that felt alive. For me, it was about creating a space that feels open, inclusive, and just a little unexpected. Wide walkways that encourage easy mingling. A central island that serves as both prep station and wine bar. And lighting that shifts effortlessly from dinner-party glow to disco-mode sparkle. The goal? A kitchen that’s designed not just to function, but to fuel joy, spark connection, and keep the good times rolling.
How I Transformed My Kitchen into the Ultimate Hosting Space
When it came to designing my own kitchen, I wanted more than just a beautiful space, I wanted a showstopper that would be the ultimate hub for hosting. Despite having a large open area with bifold doors on both sides leading to the garden, I had limited wall space for cabinetry, so I had to get creative. When you have a blank canvas, some people find it difficult, but actually, it makes it so much more fun. I wanted to do something truly unique, something that hadn’t been done before. It’s worth highlighting that your ideas (however mad they might seem at first) can come to life. Be brave with your choices, sometimes they result in something really quite wonderful.
My standout feature is the stunning curved island. It had never been done before, and has never been replicated. This is actually the first time I’m sharing it with the world, unless you’ve been to one of my kitchen parties! The kitchen was designed around this striking, oversized centrepiece. Sculptural, space-like, and practical. The island is wide enough to host a full buffet spread and still have room for drinks, plates, and socialising, without ever feeling cramped. I went with five bar stools to keep conversations flowing while I cook, though I often find myself dancing around the kitchen, with the layout giving everyone space to move, mingle, and enjoy without getting in each other’s way.
With storage on both sides (including deep pan drawers and sleek, mirrored shallow cupboards) it feels both functional and artful. I chose Corian for the worktops to keep the lines clean and clutter-free, anchored by a must-have Quooker tap. Gloss-finish doors in a dark, textured palette were paired with warm wood accents and a bronze mirrored splashback to reflect light and lift the mood. A built-in wine fridge sits conveniently within reach, allowing guests to help themselves to a chilled bottle without interrupting the cooking flow.
One of the things I love most about the space is how naturally it flows. My entrance hall leads straight into the kitchen, making the whole area feel open, welcoming, and connected. When we hosted my son’s 21st, it really came into its own. The front hall became the dance floor, while the kitchen offered a slightly quieter spot where people could gather, chat, and relax on the settee (which, by the way, isn’t built-in, but I made sure the design allowed space for it when needed). Guests could move freely between areas, and the atmosphere shifted effortlessly depending on where you were. Lively in one space, calm in another. The layout just worked, allowing us to make the most of every part of the house and letting the celebration unfold naturally.
It’s a true reflection of me and my partner, full of creativity and personality. I’m not from a design background, but I genuinely believe it’s within all of us to create something personal and extraordinary. This kitchen is ours, through and through: bold, welcoming, and totally unique.
