The Accidental Kitchen Company Director
How I Built a Kitchen Business Without Any Kitchen Experience
If you had told me years ago that I’d be running a kitchen company, I probably would have laughed. Not because I didn’t believe I could run a business, but because kitchens were never part of my plan. My background was rooted in completely different industries, and at that point, I had absolutely no experience in the world of kitchens.
And yet today, here I am, the proud owner of James James Kitchens, a kitchen company in West Kirby, a business with over 50 years of history and a strong presence within the West Kirby community. It wasn’t a straight path to get here, and it certainly wasn’t planned, but when I look back now, every step seems to have led me exactly where I am today.
So I wanted to share my story, how I became the Accidental Kitchen Company Director. Not just so people can get to know me a little more, but also in the hope that it might inspire someone else. Because sometimes, the opportunities that shape your future are the ones you feel least prepared for, and all it takes is the courage to say yes.
A Background Built on Business, Not Kitchens
Before James James Kitchens came into my life, I had already spent many years running businesses, just in industries that looked very different on the surface. For 15 years, I ran a double-glazing company, learning first-hand what it takes to lead, make decisions under pressure, and carry the responsibility of a business every single day.
Alongside that, I also ran a vending machine business across Liverpool and Southport, which required a completely different kind of operational thinking but relied on the same core foundations. Those years gave me something invaluable. Leadership, resilience, and the ability to solve problems, qualities I didn’t realise at the time would become so important later on.
What those experiences really taught me was how to adapt, how to trust my instincts, and how to keep moving forward even when things didn’t go to plan. Running two very different businesses meant constantly learning, adjusting, and finding solutions, and it built a mindset that wasn’t tied to one industry but instead focused on how to make things work, skills that would ultimately give me the confidence to step into something completely new.
The Chapter That Changed Everything And Finding My Way Again
In 2009, my life changed in a way no one can ever truly prepare for.
My husband passed away from two malignant brain tumours at just 38 years old, and in what felt like a single moment, everything shifted. I went from sharing a life and a business with someone to facing the world on my own, with two young children aged eight and six depending on me, and a business that didn’t stop just because my world had been turned upside down.
There was no time to pause or process things in the way you might hope to. Life had to carry on, and so did I. Looking back, that period shaped me more than anything else ever has. It forced me to dig deep, to find a strength I didn’t know I had, and to keep showing up every day even when everything felt overwhelming. It wasn’t about having all the answers; it was simply about putting one foot in front of the other and refusing to give up.
Eventually, I reached a point where I knew I needed a new chapter, something that would allow me to rebuild not just practically, but personally too. That’s when I joined Yesss Electrical, starting as a PA. It felt like a fresh start in every sense, a chance to learn, grow, and gradually regain my confidence in a completely different environment.
Over time, I worked my way into management, supporting 15 branches and gaining experience on a much larger scale than I’d ever worked in before. I loved the structure, the people, and the sense of progress it gave me. Even then, there was always a quiet voice in the background reminding me that I wasn’t finished yet. I still had more to build and more to give.
The Opportunity I Almost Said No To
Then came a conversation that, at the time, didn’t feel particularly significant. My partner Roy mentioned that James James Kitchens was for sale, and my immediate reaction was to dismiss it. I remember saying, “I have no kitchen experience,” because from my perspective, that felt like a genuine limitation and a very practical reason not to pursue it any further.
Roy, however, saw something completely different. He reminded me that while I might not have industry-specific knowledge, I already had the skills that truly mattered. Leadership, management, and vision. Those were the foundations I had been building for years, even if I hadn’t realised where they might one day take me. Even with that encouragement, there was still a voice in my head saying, I don’t know what I’m doing, and that uncertainty felt very real.
Despite all of that, something shifted. Instead of focusing on what I lacked, I began to consider what might be possible if I was willing to learn. Saying yes didn’t come from confidence or certainty; it came from a decision to trust myself and step into something unfamiliar. That single decision led me to where I am today, becoming what I now call the Accidental Kitchen Company Director.
Learning, Leading, and Respecting What Came Before
Stepping into a kitchen showroom in West Kirby was a huge learning curve, as I was entering an industry I didn’t know and working alongside people with years of experience. There were moments where I felt completely out of my depth, and times when I questioned whether I had made the right decision. It’s not easy stepping into something unfamiliar, especially when you’re surrounded by people who have spent years mastering their craft.
What I came to realise, though, was that while I didn’t have kitchen experience, I did have the ability to run a business, lead people, and keep going when things felt uncertain. By focusing on learning, listening, and surrounding myself with the right team, I began to grow into the role and build confidence in a completely new space.
At the same time, I was very aware that James James Kitchens is not just any business. It’s a 53-year-old company with deep roots in the local community and a reputation that has been built over decades. From the very beginning, I knew this wasn’t about changing everything or starting again; it was about respecting what had already been created and understanding why it had stood the test of time.
Alongside that respect for the past, there was also a clear opportunity to bring in new energy, fresh ideas, and a stronger direction for the future. By finding the balance between honouring the heritage and introducing a more modern vision, we’ve been able to evolve the business into a leading choice for bespoke kitchens in West Kirby.

Building Something Special with the Right People
One of the most important parts of this journey has been building the right team, because no business succeeds without the people behind it. At James James Kitchens, we’ve created a team of passionate, skilled individuals who genuinely care about the work they do and the customers they serve.
My role has never been to have all the answers, but to bring people together, support them, and create an environment where everyone can thrive. When you have the right people around you, it allows the business to grow in a way that feels strong and sustainable.
Being based in West Kirby means we are part of a close-knit and supportive community, and that has played a huge role in our journey. We’re not just designing kitchens, we’re becoming part of people’s homes and their everyday lives through custom kitchen design in West Kirby.
The support we’ve received locally has meant everything, from returning customers to word-of-mouth recommendations. It’s a constant reminder that relationships, trust, and reputation are at the heart of any successful business.

What This Journey Has Taught Me
Looking back, one of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that you don’t always need experience in the specific industry you’re stepping into. What matters more is having belief in yourself and the willingness to learn as you go.
There will always be moments of doubt and times when you feel out of your depth, but that doesn’t mean you’re not capable. Sometimes, the biggest opportunities come from the situations you feel least prepared for.
I often describe myself as the Accidental Kitchen Company Director, but when I reflect on the journey, it doesn’t feel accidental at all. Every experience I’ve had, from running businesses to navigating life’s challenges, has led me here.
None of it was wasted, and each step played a part in shaping how I lead today. What once felt unexpected now feels like a natural progression of everything that came before.

Where I Am Today
Today, James James Kitchens is more than just a business I took over; it’s something I’ve helped shape, grow, and reimagine. We’ve built on its strong foundations while bringing in new energy and direction, becoming a trusted name for luxury kitchens in West Kirby.
For me personally, it has become one of the most fulfilling chapters of my life, combining everything I’ve learned with a clear vision for the future. It’s a business I’m incredibly proud to be part of.
If there’s anything I hope people take from my story, it’s that you don’t need to have everything figured out before you start. You don’t need to feel completely ready to take the next step.
Sometimes, all it takes is the courage to say yes and the resilience to keep going. Because you never know where that one decision might lead, and for me, it led here.
