5 Controversial Kitchen Design Opinions That Might Change How You Think About Your Space

Maria Challis • January 23, 2026

Kitchen design comes with no shortage of opinions.

Everyone has one. Friends, family, social media, Pinterest boards and television shows all tell us what a kitchen should look like and what it needs to include. Some of that advice is helpful. Some of it is outdated. And some of it quietly leads people into expensive mistakes they wish they had avoided.

At James James Kitchens, we have designed and installed luxury kitchens for years. We see the same misconceptions appear time and time again when homeowners begin planning a new kitchen. Many of them sound logical at first. Bigger must be better. Trends are exciting. More appliances mean more value. But when you look closer, these ideas often do not deliver a kitchen that truly works for your lifestyle.

Within this blog I am exploring the five controversial kitchen design opinions we hear at James James Kitchens all the time, and explaining why they matter more than you might expect. If you are thinking about upgrading your kitchen this year or simply love good design, this might just change how you think about your space.

1. You Do Not Need a Bigger Kitchen You Need Better Design

One of the most common things we hear is “We just need more space.” Homeowners often assume that their kitchen problems come down to square footage. The room feels cramped. Storage feels limited. Worktops feel cluttered. So the natural conclusion is that the kitchen needs to be bigger.

In reality, many kitchens do not need extending at all. They need rethinking.

Better kitchen design focuses on how the space works rather than how large it is. A well designed kitchen makes every centimetre count. Smart internal storage solutions often create more usable space than knocking down walls ever could.

Deep drawers instead of cupboards transform accessibility. Pull out larders use vertical space efficiently. Integrated corner storage eliminates dead zones. Zoning allows different tasks to happen comfortably within the same footprint.

We regularly redesign kitchens where the room size stays exactly the same but the functionality improves dramatically. Suddenly there is space for everything. Worktops feel clearer. Movement feels effortless. The kitchen works with the way the household actually lives.

A bigger kitchen is not automatically a better kitchen. A thoughtfully designed one almost always is.

2. Trendy Kitchens Age Faster Than You Think

Trends are seductive. They flood our screens daily and make us feel like we are falling behind if our home does not look the same. Bold colours, statement finishes and dramatic design choices can feel exciting and fresh in the moment.

The problem is that kitchen trends often age far quicker than expected.

What feels current today can feel tired in just a few years. This is especially true in a space like the kitchen which is not updated frequently. Unlike cushions or wall paint, a kitchen is a long term investment. It needs to look and feel right not just now but for many years to come.

This does not mean your kitchen has to be bland or characterless. Timeless interior design does not equal boring. It means choosing a foundation that will stand the test of time and layering personality in more subtle and flexible ways.

Neutral cabinetry with warm textures. Classic door styles with contemporary detailing. Natural materials that age gracefully. These elements create a kitchen that feels connected to the home rather than tied to a moment on social media.

Trends can still have a place. They simply need to be applied thoughtfully. Accent colours, lighting choices and accessories can all be updated more easily if your tastes change.

A kitchen that still feels beautiful and relevant in ten years is far more luxurious than one that looked fashionable for two.

3. Your Worktops Matter More Than Your Cabinet Colour

This is one of our most controversial opinions and one of the most important.

Many homeowners spend weeks agonising over cabinet colours. Warm white or cool white. Greige or taupe. Matte or satin. While these decisions do matter, they often distract from a far more impactful choice.

Your worktops.

Worktops take the brunt of daily life. They handle heat, spills, chopping, cleaning and constant use. They influence how the kitchen functions and how it feels more than most people realise.

The right worktop surface affects durability, maintenance and long term satisfaction. Some materials are incredibly robust but require specific care. Others are low maintenance but offer a different aesthetic. The finish, thickness and edge detail all contribute to the overall design language of the space.

A beautiful cabinet colour paired with the wrong worktop will always feel slightly off. A well chosen worktop can elevate even the simplest cabinetry.

At James James Kitchens, we guide clients through worktop options based on how they live. Do you cook daily or occasionally? Do you entertain often? Do you want something that develops character over time or something that stays consistent? There is no universal best choice, only the right choice for you.

When worktops are chosen thoughtfully, they become the quiet design hero of the kitchen.

4. Most People Overspend on Appliances They Do Not Actually Need

High end appliances are impressive. Touchscreens, steam functions, warming drawers and integrated coffee machines all sound appealing. But more features do not automatically equal better value.

We often see homeowners investing heavily in kitchen appliances packed with functions they rarely use. The result is a kitchen design that costs more than necessary without genuinely improving day to day life.

Luxury interior design is not about having everything. It is about having exactly what you need.

A family who cooks simple meals most evenings does not need the same appliances as a passionate home chef who entertains regularly. A busy household might prioritise reliability and ease of use over specialist functions.

Choosing appliances that match your lifestyle makes a bigger difference than choosing the most expensive options available.

We help clients think honestly about how they use their kitchen. What do you cook? How often? Who uses the appliances? What matters most to you? From there, we recommend appliances that support those habits rather than complicate them.

When appliances are chosen with intention, the kitchen feels effortless rather than overwhelming.

5. A Kitchen Is Not Expensive It Is Expensive to Get Wrong

This opinion often stops people in their tracks, but it is one we stand by wholeheartedly.

A kitchen is a significant investment. There is no denying that. But the real cost comes when it is poorly planned.

An impractical layout leads to frustration every day. Wasted storage means clutter builds up. Awkward workflows make cooking feel like a chore. Fixing these issues later is far more expensive than getting it right from the start.

Thoughtful interior kitchen design upfront always saves money in the long run.

This is where professional kitchen design makes a genuine difference. It is not just about aesthetics. It is about understanding how spaces flow, how storage works, how lighting affects mood and function, and how all the elements come together as one cohesive whole.

A well designed kitchen adds value to your home and quality to your daily life. It becomes a space you enjoy using rather than tolerating.

When done properly, a kitchen is not an expense. It is an investment.
