Top 10 Questions to Ask Your Kitchen Designer Before You Sign

Maria Challis • August 15, 2025

Designing a new kitchen is an exciting opportunity, but it’s also a major investment, both financially and emotionally. Asking the right questions before committing to a designer can help you avoid costly surprises, ensure a smoother process, and give you confidence that your vision will be brought to life. These conversations aren’t just about gathering information. They’re about building trust, understanding how your designer works, and making sure you’re in expert hands from start to finish.

To help you get started, I’ve compiled 10 essential questions to ask your kitchen designer before you sign on the dotted line, including the answers you would receive if you were to choose James James Kitchens. These questions will not only give you insight into the process, style, and professionalism, but will also help you feel empowered to make decisions that align with your vision, budget, and lifestyle.

1. Can I see examples of your past kitchen projects similar to mine?

Absolutely! We’ve got plenty of past projects for you to explore. Some right here in our West Kirby showroom and many more on our website. Chances are we’ve designed something similar to what you’re imagining, so you can see what’s possible before we start your own.

2. What’s your design process from start to finish?

Once you book an appointment, we’ll pop round for a home survey. Your designer will take precise measurements and chat through your wish list. We’ll leave you with some brochures to flick through over a cuppa.

Next, we’ll invite you into the showroom for your first design presentation. That’s where we look at your initial plan, colours, finishes, and accessories, handles, taps, lighting, you name it. Most clients make a few tweaks at this stage, so we’ll arrange a second showroom visit to show you the updated design and a full cost breakdown.

When you’re happy, a 25% deposit secures your project. We’ll then arrange a pre-fit survey on site with you, your designer, and your fitter before placing the order. Once everything’s confirmed, we’ll lock in your delivery date and confirm it in writing. Nice and simple.

3. How do you handle budgeting, quotes, and unexpected costs?

We like to be upfront from the very start. If you can give us an honest idea of your budget, we can design a kitchen that works beautifully for you without nasty surprises later. And if anything changes along the way, we’ll talk it through with you before going ahead.

4. What’s the typical timeline from design approval to a fully installed kitchen?

It really depends on how many revisions you’d like, but most designs are finalised within 2-4 weeks. Once we’re ready to go, installation usually takes 1-3 weeks depending on the size and complexity of your kitchen, also add in the manufacture lead time which would take between 4-6 weeks depending on products chosen. We’ll always agree on timelines in advance so you can plan with confidence.

5. Do you work with specific contractors or suppliers?

Yes! We’ve built great relationships over the years with a trusted team of fitters, electricians, plumbers, and other specialists. We also work with carefully chosen suppliers who meet our high standards for quality and reliability.

6. How will you help me choose materials, finishes, and appliances that suit my space and lifestyle?

We make it easy. In the showroom, we’ll go through samples so you can see and feel the finishes. We’ll help you visualise how everything works together, and we can even arrange appliance demos if you’d like. Our advice is always tailored to how you cook, live, and use your space.

7. Will I receive 3D visuals before we begin?

Yes. You’ll get detailed 3D renderings so you can see exactly how your kitchen will look from every angle before we place the order.

8. How do you handle changes or revisions once the project has started, and what costs might be involved?

We understand things can evolve once you see the design taking shape. Small changes can often be accommodated without issue. Bigger changes might affect the timeline or cost, but we’ll always be upfront about that before moving forward.

9. What warranties or guarantees do you offer?

All our kitchens come with manufacturer warranties on units, worktops..

10. What makes your kitchen design service different from others?

We’re a family business rooted in West Kirby, and we take pride in making the design process personal and enjoyable. You’ll work directly with your designer from start to finish, so nothing gets lost in translation. Our aim is simple, a kitchen that not only looks stunning but works perfectly for your lifestyle, for years to come.

By taking the time to ask these questions, you’ll feel informed, confident, and ready to move forward with a kitchen designer who truly understands your needs. At James James Kitchens, we welcome thoughtful questions because they open the door to clear communication, creative solutions, and stunning results. Your kitchen should be as unique as you are, and with the right partnership, it can be everything you’ve imagined and more.
