5 Tips To Design A Kitchen Kids Can Grow Up In (That Grown-Ups Still Love)

Maria Challis • July 24, 2025

At James James Kitchens, we’ve worked with plenty of families who say the same thing:

“We want a beautiful kitchen, but it has to work for the kids too.”

We get it. You don’t want to spend your mornings wrestling cereal boxes off the top shelf or worrying about sticky fingers on your new cabinetry. However, you also don’t want to sacrifice the calm, clean, and luxurious style that makes your kitchen feel like home. Good news! You don’t have to choose. In this article, I am showing you how to create a kitchen that’s practical, stylish, kid-friendly, and still truly yours with these 5 luxury kitchens tips.

Tips to design a luxury kitchen that is child friendly by James James Kitchens

Breakfast, Homework, Dance Routines. All in One Space

You’ve probably noticed your kitchen island has become a bit of a multitasker. A breakfast hangout, the homework station, and an after-dinner performance stage all in one. Sound familiar? You’re not alone. That’s where open-plan kitchens really shine. We love designing layouts that give everyone their own space. Having enough room to cook without stepping over school bags, with surfaces that adapt for just about anything the day throws at you.

Smart Storage = Sanity Saved

Let’s be honest… the fewer times you hear, “Mum, where’s my…?” each day, the better. With smart storage at every level, you can stop running around mid-coffee, mid-breakfast, or mid-chaos trying to find things. From snack drawers kids can reach on their own to tall larders that hide the mess behind beautiful doors. There’s even space for a secret Prosecco shelf (because let’s face it, you’ve earned it).

Stylish But Not Too Precious

We LOVE gorgeous finishes as much as you do but they’ve got to survive real life.
Spaghetti splashes, jammy fingerprints, the occasional Play-Doh disaster. That’s why we lean into materials like quartz worktops (they wipe down in seconds and still look immaculate) and matte cabinetry that won’t show every little smudge. As we know you still deserve a luxury kitchen that’s full of style and built to last that does’;t need a daily polishing.

Safety That Doesn’t Scream “Safety”

Protecting our kids is always a priority, and that doesn’t stop in the kitchen. Keeping little fingers safe and preventing bumps on sharp corners is key. We build in subtle safety features that blend seamlessly with your luxury design. These include induction hobs that stay cool, soft-close drawers to prevent slamming, and rounded edges exactly where they’re needed. It’s like your kitchen is wrapped in invisible bubble wrap.

It’s Still YOUR Kitchen

Your kitchen should still feel like yours, even with kids in the picture. Whether it’s bespoke cabinetry in your dream colour, statement lighting, or an island made for entertaining once the kids are in bed, we design for the whole picture, not just the school years.

Let’s Build the Heart of Your Home Exactly How You Want It

Real life is messy, loud, and full of surprises. Your kitchen should be ready for all of it, without losing its sense of style. Pop into our West Kirby showroom or get in touch. Let’s chat about designing a kitchen your whole family will love (and you’ll still want to show off on Instagram).
